Brynn pulled his rifle into position and concentrated everything on running. He narrowed his eyes at the Lightning Bug and blocked out everything else. Cartridges whistled around his ears.

He catapulted across the platform. The scavengers saw him closing on their position, and most of them turned their fire on him. He hefted his rifle and sprayed the last of his iron toward them.

The shots bought him a fraction of a second to skid under the Lightning Bug’s crumpled hull and slide to the silo. He vaulted onto his knees and slapped the control. The door slid open and he tumbled inside.

In the flight compartment, he lunged for the pilot’s station. The display blinked on the instant he stepped into Charlie’s usual place, and he seized the helm.

Through the display, he got a clear view of the Yellowjacket right in front of him. No one was on the ground anymore. Zayim must have taken the Kr’ol inside. The ship wheeled back and forth, unloading its guns at the scavengers on the ground and returning fire to the artillery placements overhead.

It pivoted its back end toward the flyer, and Brynn saw that the flyer hold was closed. He couldn’t get inside. At that moment, a crushing blow from overhead smashed into the Bug’s roof. A gut-wrenching creak of metal told him one more hit like that, and the whole flyer would cave in.

He tried to activate the Lightning Bug’s defense bubble, but nothing happened. He checked the Trinium reaction. It was still fully active. Something must have gone wrong with the control relays.

He didn’t have time to worry about that. He turned his attention to the flyer’s guns, but when he transferred control to the pilot’s station, the Yellowjacket swiveled on its axis and the gunnery battalion erupted in dozens of shots.

Charges blasted upward, but the gunnery battalion didn’t try to hit the scavengers’ placements. Instead, the shots slammed into the crater rim underneath the guns, and the crust of Tusselite holding them up collapsed. Guns, rock, and dust showered into the cavern and innumerable crashes echoed through the Lightning Bug’s hull.

The sound set Brynn’s teeth on edge, but when he checked his display again, he saw the Yellowjacket bobbing in front of him, pointing its back end toward the Lighting Bug. The flyer hold stood open, just inviting him into it.

He slammed the helm forward and the flyer rocketed off the ground. A grating sound of metal raking stone scratched across the flyer’s underside, and then it launched into the air at full speed. It hurtled across the cavern and crashed into the hold.

The next instant, the Yellowjacket vaulted straight up through a curtain of fire. It zoomed out of the crater and arced into the clear night sky.

Brynn stepped off the pilot’s station, but when he rode the silo to exit the flyer, the outer door refused to open. He stepped back, gathered his resolve, and kicked at it with all his might. Still, it didn’t budge.

He cast around for something, anything to get him out of here.
